What is ADHD?
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurological disorder that is characterized by persistent increased levels of inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity. ADHD is most commonly diagnosed during childhood but can also persist and affect men and women as adults. Those who have ADHD tend to struggle with performing and completing everyday tasks, including tasks at work, school, and general household chores. Early recognition, diagnosis, and treatment are key components for improving outcomes in those with ADHD.
ADHD Symptoms
ADHD can often be a difficult condition to diagnose, as symptoms vary greatly from person to person, both in nature and in severity. While some may just have issues with paying attention and focusing on the tasks at hand, others may experience bouts of forgetfulness and restlessness.
Although there is a wide range of symptoms associated with ADHD, some of the most common symptoms we see in our child and adult patients include:
- Difficulty completing tasks
- Difficulty focusing
- Disorganization
- Frequent mood swings
- Impulsivity
- Poor time management skills
- Restlessness and hyperactivity
- Trouble multitasking
If you are experiencing two or more of the above symptoms in your day-to-day life and are getting frustrated with their effects, we encourage you to come in and see the expert providers at Atlanta Specialized Care. We are able to accurately diagnose your mental health condition and provide you with individualized, evidence-based care, so you can return to living your life to the fullest.
ADHD Treatment
ADHD treatment options vary greatly depending on the patient’s unique set of symptoms and the severity of those symptoms. In general, treatment options for ADHD include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) in the form of individual therapy, lifestyle modifications, and medication management.
Medications are commonly used to alleviate symptoms of ADHD, with stimulants being the most frequently prescribed. Stimulants work by precisely targeting neurotransmitters in the brain that impact focus and alertness. Non-stimulant medications may also be used if a patient does not respond well to stimulant treatments. Non-stimulants improve focus, impulse control, and mood regulation. Antidepressants may also be used when a patient is diagnosed with both ADHD and depression or anxiety to treat both disorders simultaneously.
