Mood Dysregulation
Do you feel like you or a family member is riding an emotional rollercoaster? Ups and downs ranging from elation to sadness to rage can indicate a variety of mental health challenges. Those struggling with bipolar, trauma, depression, anxiety, addiction, autism, and ADHD are at a greater risk for high peaks, low valleys, and impulsive decisions that result in consequences.
The therapists at Atlanta Specialized Care teach clients coping mechanisms to regulate mood and skillfully navigate life. When medication is an appropriate and necessary part of regulating one’s mood, our skilled psychiatric nurse practitioner can provide medication assessments and management. We are also happy to partner with outside psychiatric providers.
Alcohol and Drugs Addiction
When does the use of alcohol or drugs become a problem? If you answer “yes” to two or more of the following, your alcohol or drug use is of concern:
- Using in larger amounts or for longer than intended
- Wanting to cut down or stop, but not managing to
- Spending a lot of time to get, use, or recover from use
- Craving
- Inability to manage commitments due to use
- Continuing to use, even when it causes problems in relationships
- Giving up important activities because of use
- Continuing to use, even when it puts you in danger
- Continuing to use, even when physical or psychological problems may be made worse by use
- Increasing tolerance
- Withdrawal symptoms
Some factors such as coexisting mental health issues (including but not limited to anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, PTSD, OCD, ADHD, and schizophrenia) as well as genetics can increase the likelihood of substance abuse. We can’t control our genetic predispositions, but we can increase the likelihood that substance abuse treatment will be more effective by treating co-existing mental health issues.
The therapists at Atlanta Specialized Care treat not only the behaviors and cognitions related to substance abuse, but also those related to co-existing mental health issues. We treat the whole person – biologically, psychologically, and sociologically.
Eating disorders are complex and serious mental illnesses that are characterized by abnormal and harmful eating behaviors. These disorders can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender, or cultural background, and can have devastating effects on physical and psychological health, as well as social and interpersonal relationships.
Eating disorders include anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge-eating disorder, and other specified feeding or eating disorder. Understanding the causes, symptoms, and consequences of eating disorders is crucial in identifying and treating these conditions successfully. At Atlanta Specialized Care, our team of experienced therapists offers evidence based treatment for individuals struggling with eating disorders.

- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy: Understanding through CBT how and why you feel negative emotions has been shown to help with trauma responses.
- Progressive Counting: A well-researched trauma intervention that can be utilized with any age group.
