What is ADD?
Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by difficulty with sustaining attention and/or impulsivity. Symptoms of ADD typically manifest in children at a very young age but often persist into adulthood. Children with ADD often have difficulty focusing on tasks that require sustained concentration and may become easily distracted or overwhelmed easily.
ADD is considered a subtype of ADHD, and differs in that those who struggle with ADD may not experience bouts of hyperactivity and restlessness. Those who receive treatment for ADD find they are better able to focus on everyday tasks and that they live a happier, more fulfilled life.
ADD Symptoms
Like with ADHD, those who struggle with ADD may also struggle with receiving a diagnosis. This is because the symptoms of ADD vary greatly from person to person, both in nature and in severity. In addition, the symptoms of ADD that a patient experiences may vary significantly as they age.
ADD is a complex condition with a wide range of symptoms. That said, there is a list of symptoms our patients most often experience. These symptoms include:
-
- Bouts of anxiety
- Difficulty staying on-task
- Difficulty staying organized
- Forgetfulness
- Frequently losing items like a cell phone or keys
- Getting easily distracted
- Mood swings
- Short attention span
- Trouble following directions
ADD Treatment
The most common treatment for ADD is a combination of medication management, individual therapy, and lifestyle changes. Medication such as stimulants can help reduce hyperactivity and impulsive symptoms, but it is important to understand that medications may not be the only or best option for every individual.
Therapy can play an important role in treating ADD. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is a specialized type of therapy that focuses on teaching positive coping skills and helping to identify unhealthy thought patterns. This type of therapy can be beneficial in dealing with mood swings, anxiety, and other emotional issues caused by ADD. Family therapy may also be recommended if family dynamics are impacting the individual's condition.
In general, your ADD treatment plan is going to be personalized to you, your individual needs, and your current lifestyle. The providers at Atlanta Specialized Care are happy to work with you on a deep, personal level to provide you with comprehensive care and cutting-edge solutions that can help you on your journey to living a more capable and carefree life.
